ABIDE Prayer: Praying for the Brokenhearted

The purpose of ABIDE is to seek God through prayer, rely on the Spirit as we gather together, and pray with unity and purpose. ABIDE prayers are Scripture-led and Spirit-focused prayers.

The Bible says in Psalm 147:1-3, “Hallelujah! How good it is to sing to our God, for praise is pleasant and lovely.”

Prayers of Praise

When you think of some of your favorite Christian songs, what do they say about the Lord? Let’s pray some of those ideas back to the Lord in thanksgiving right now:

“Lord, I love singing about _____________, because it reminds me that you are ____________________.”

(“I love singing about your being a good, good father. It reminds me that you are infinitely good.”  Or “I love singing ‘Victory in Jesus, because it reminds me that you have won the ultimate battle!”)

Prayers of the Brokenhearted

Psalm 147:2-3 says, “The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; he gathers Israel’s exiled people. He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.”

Everybody has had their heart broken in some way—maybe by disappointment, fear, shame, rejection, ridicule and certainly the loss of loved ones.  God cares about our hurts.  He’s hurt with us.  What was God doing when we were weeping?  He was weeping, too.  God steps into our pain and holds our broken hearts in His hands.

Let’s pray the following: “Lord, our hearts have been broken over _________________.”

Prayers of Intercession

God not only knows of our broken hearts but heals our broken hearts. Psalm 147: 3 says that “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.”

God transforms our hearts through His presence, His grace, His power.

For the heart that is guilty – He forgives.

For the heart that is fearful – He gives strength.

For the heart that is bound – He gives freedom.

For the heart that is anxious – He gives peace.

For the heart that is discouraged – he gives hope.

For the heart that is rejected – He gives acceptance.

For the heart that is bitter and angry – He gives love.

For the heart this is broken – He heals.

Let’s ask the Lord to heal the broken hearts of those who have invited us to pray for them.  There are many reasons are hearts are broken including illness, loss of loved ones, significant financial issues, broken relationships, addictions, prodigals.

Fill in the blank with the first name of the person and then pray a specific prayer such as “Father, we ask you to bandage the wounds of ___________________ and we pray for healing of their_____________________.

Prayers of Exaltation

Psalm  147:12 says  “Exalt the Lord, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion!”

How do we “exalt the Lord?” We acknowledge and speak of the greatness of our God!

Praise God for who He is, His love and power to heal the brokenhearted and to set us free.  Thank God for what He will do in our lives and in the lives of those we interceded for today.
