ABIDE Prayer: God Our Comforter

The purpose of ABIDE is to seek God through prayer, rely on the Spirit as we gather together, and pray with unity and purpose. ABIDE prayers are Scripture-led and Spirit-focused prayers.

In this ABIDE, we will seek to find in God the comfort we need for difficult times.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. (2 Corinthians 1:3)

Prayers of Praise:

He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. (2 Corinthians 1:4)

Let’s begin our ABIDE time by praising and thanking God for the way He has personally comforted us in the past and perhaps even currently during the pandemic our world is facing.

Prayer:  Father, I praise you for extending comfort to me when _______________________ (fill in the blank with a time in your life when you experienced God as your Comforter).

Prayers of Confession:

We don’t want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of our affliction that took place in Asia. We were completely overwhelmed—beyond our strength—so that we even despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead. (2 Corinthians 1:8-9)

Take a moment and ask the Holy Spirit to show you anywhere you might be seeking to find peace and comfort apart from Him.

Prayer:  Father, forgive me/us for seeking comfort in __________________________ (fill in the blank with any person/situation/circumstance you have trusted in for comfort in place of Him).

Prayers of Petition:

He has delivered us from such a terrible death, and he will deliver us. We have put our hope in him that he will deliver us again. (2 Corinthians 1:10)

Prayer:  God, I put my hope in you to deliver us from ____                                    (fill in the blank with a specific area in your life where you need God’s deliverance).

While you join in helping us by your prayers. (2 Corinthians 1:11a)

Prayer: God, we pray for______________________________ (fill in the blank with the name of someone you know who needs God’s comfort today).

Closing Prayer:  Father, I set my hope on You. I choose to daily look to You as the God of all comfort Who graciously encourages and comforts me in times of trouble. Please increase my capacity to receive Your comfort and encouragement so that it will also overflow to others around me. Thank You that the reassurance and consolation You give is more than enough to help me endure whatever You allow into my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
